5.497 miles to be exact. That’s the approximate height of Mount Everest. The world’s tallest and most treacherous mountain. In 1924, its dizzying altitude warned off most explorers, but not George Mallory. He saw it as a challenge.
So, in June that year, our hero from Mobberley attempted to scale the icy beast and was last seen alive a mere 800 feet from the summit.
We like to believe George was the first man to reach the peak. And there’s solid evidence to back us up. So, in his honour, we hand crafted a gin that captured his fighting spirit. Spirit of George. Made with Nepalese botanicals from the Himalayas, our award-winning gin ensures his legacy lives on.
So please, raise a glass with a slice of orange to our fearless explorer. The man, the myth, the legend, George Mallory.
Mountaineer
1886 – 1924
Spirit Of George was conceived at a time when the Gin renaissance was already in full-swing. In 2017, the producer BIG HILL Distillery knew that in order to make any form of impression within the highly competitive gin market that something special needed to be created. It not only had to taste good, look good but it also needed a great story that tied everything together. Finally, to stand-out and be truly unique they embarked on a mission to ensure that the botanical composition actually complimented and was relevant to the back story (Read more on botanicals).
This became George Mallory’s life-affirming retort when questioned
on his reasons for attempting to conquer Everest in 1924. In tribute
and in celebration of this indomitable hero and inspiration, let us
raise a glass to the Spirit of George.
